It's spring break, and this vacation is all about the kids. We have a loosely planned road trip, a few stops along the way, and some family to see. While driving west across Florida, I downloaded the class pass app, eager to squeeze in some workouts when possible. My coworker sent me her referral code, so I have a whopping 40 credits burning a hole in my digital pocket. I put in the city we'd be in, the type of workout I wanted to do, and dove headfirst into the world of workout wanderlust. I mean, who doesn't love working out on vacation, am I right?
First up on the workout list is reformer Pilates. I walk into a brand new studio that's been open only a month, the instructor tells me. Following the question of whether I've ever done pilates, I casually dropped the bomb that I used to rock the instructor badge. Okay, so it was circa 20 years ago, but who's counting? Mid-class, I'm regretting that boast as I desperately try to keep pace, glancing at my watch like it's a lifeline. Let's say the next day, my glutes were on strike.
The next day, I opted for a class ominously named "Tone and Abs." I walk into a different gym that gives CrossFit vibes and ten different stations scattered like a fitness maze. The instructor pairs us up, offers a quick demo, and assures me she'll rescue me if I get lost. Cue my confident nod as I mention this was my jam back in the day. Fast forward to halfway through, and I'm drowning in sweat, questioning if I really said "used to." When the instructor hands me a towel, I make a mental note: "Sweat and Shred" should be the real title.
So, on day three, I opt for an easy yoga class. Surrounded by silver-haired yogis, I'm ready for some namaste action. But as I push into a backbend bridge pose, my right quad decides to spasm and I find myself desperately massaging the area trying to get the muscle to release. The teacher notices and walks over with a tennis ball, saving me from vacation quad-crises.
To say I gained perspective and some muscle tone during this road trip would be accurate. These types of experiences are what make the trip fun and engage your body and mind differently. If you don't attend different studios and gyms while traveling, I encourage you to give it a try. It's a great way to meet local people and get a feel for the city. And bonus, you've burned some calories, so eat all the ice cream (guilt-free)
